Arkells

Arkell’s Brewery was established in 1843 by John Arkell and 175 years later, is one of less than thirty family breweries remaining in the UK. As Swindon’s oldest business, Arkell’s has kept its founding values alive and continues to produce local beer for local customers. These values have been continued by the four family members in charge today; Chairman James Arkell, his cousin Nick Arkell, Head of Sales, and James’ sons George Arkell, and Alex Arkell are Managing Director and Head Brewer respectively.

Working alongside James, Nick, George and Alex are generations of other local families who have played key parts in the brewing process since the brewery’s inception and continue to brew real ale for nearly 100 pubs across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire.

Arkell’s Brewery continues to make award-winning beers from mainstays such as Wiltshire Gold, Kingsdown and 3Bs, to newer beers including Hoperation IPA. This year alone has been a bumper year with a total of 13 awards for their craft ales and beers from prestigious award bodies such as Taste of the West, The International Taste Challenge, SIBA and The Taste Awards. Special ales are brewed regularly, by Head Brewer, Alex Arkell, keeping the art of craft ale alive, offering drinkers new tastes and flavours all hand made in their traditional brewery.

As part of its 175-year anniversary celebrations, Arkell’s recently opened its newest offer to customers; The Grape and Grain. Located at its Kingsdown Brewery, members of the public and the trade can not only browse and purchase from premium selection of wines, beers and spirits but also feel free to explore the newly created heritage centre upstairs. It will also act as an event space for regular tasting evenings where customers can enjoy and learn more about Arkell’s premium selection of wines, beers & spirits.

As well as brewing great ales and beers the way they should be and distributing them to pubs in the South West, Arkell’s is committed to empowering their network of tenants and landlords and encourage their own entrepreneurial flair. Working collaboratively, the brewery is passionate about allowing freedom and creativity in their pub work space and actively encourage vendors to nurture public house’s in a way that’s right for and suits them, empowering them to be their own boss.
