Palmers Brewery

Palmers have been brewing finest ales since 1794. In the late 18th Century the Gundry family built a brewery on the banks of the River Brit in Bridport. Nearly 100 years later, two Palmer brothers – John Cleeves and Robert Henry – bought the operation and its pubs and gave it their names: JC & RH Palmer. Today, their great-grandsons John and Cleeves Palmer and great-great-granddaughter Emily Palmer Ramus work in the company.

Our 53 pubs are all traditional tenancies and can be found across Dorset, Somerset and Devon and are some of the most characterful and best-loved in the South West. They can be found in pretty country towns, under the shadow of Glastonbury Tor, deep in greenest Thomas Hardy country and by the sea on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast. Palmers have a reputation for quality, Annabel Smith once described us as “obsessive” which are happy to take this. All our pubs are Cask Marque accredited and subject to our own rigorous cellar audit scheme. We are particularly proud that the East Devon and West Dorset CAMRA Pubs of the Year 2022 are both Palmers pubs. All 53 tenanted pubs offer Palmers’ award-winning ales and quality local food, and many are blessed with picturesque beer gardens and welcoming accommodation.

Our ales are brewed using the best ingredients at the original Old Brewery in Bridport – famous as the only thatched brewery in Britain. A tour of our historic brewhouse allows visitors to see each follow the process from the raw ingredients through to a few halves of the final product. Our five core ales; Copper Ale (alc. 3.7% vol.), Palmers IPA (alc. 4.2% vol.), Dorset Gold (alc. 4.5% vol.), Palmers 200 and Tally Ho! (alc. 5.5% vol.) were recently joined by our craft keg, The Dorset Pale (alc. 4% vol.).

Tally Ho! is the SIBA South West 2019 Champion Cask. Palmers IPA, Dorset Gold, Palmers 200 and Tally Ho! are available in bottles and are all Taste of the West 2022 Gold winners whilst Palmers 200 was a SIBA National Champion in 2020 . We are twice winners of the Publican Morning Advertiser - Best Tenanted Pub Company.
