What Do You Need to Run a Pub?
If you are planning on running your own pub, there are a several things you will need. Below outlines the basics to get you started.
Personal Skills
You will need several key skills if you are thinking of running your own pub, including:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent customer service skills
- Management and leadership skills
- Entrepreneurial skills
- Drive and determination
- Flexibility
- Strong numerical skills and financial understanding
- Energetic and positive personality
- Being able to cope under pressure
...to name but a few!
A Personal Licence
It is a legal requirement that all pubs are run by someone who holds a personal licence. You must have a personal licence in order to sell alcohol. The pub operator that you choose to work for may help you obtain this. You can also visit the BII website for more information on how to obtain a personal licence.
Financial Commitment
This will vary depending on each business opportunity and the capital you are required to invest will be shown in the letting details. You will need to be able to demonstrate the amount you are able to invest.
A Business Plan
A business plan should always include your vision for the pub, opportunities for growth, assessment of your target market and competition, marketing plans and financial projections. You should also include a sensitivity element which shows you understand the impact a 5-10% change in sales or costs has on your profitability.
Agreement Understanding
You will need to take the Pre-Entry Awareness Training (PEAT) online with the BII to show you have a full understanding of the differences in types of agreements available to you when taking a pub.
